If you’re not supposed to use a #40, what do you use? #10?
September 5th, 2010 at 5:43 am
Please never use a 40#. You could cut or clipper burn your dog.

It troubles me when people don’t know what breed of dog they have. Mixed or not. I can’t stand 40 blades.

This video is useless. All she does is stand there talking and pet the dog. Hellooooooooo. Do you know how to groom it. Anyone can read a cue card.

I groom all my Shih Tzu’s (3), and use a #40 to trim out the eyes (only). Although this is a close cut, the blade is so fine it’ll never knick the tiny (and almost unseen) nose wrinkles this breed can have. This breed is very sweet, but if you cut them even once, they’ll never let a clipper near their face again.

wow i never thought that gizmo is so popular here in youtube

i’ve been a groomer for over ten years. My favorite haircut on a shih-tzu (if the owner wants a summer cut but not too short) is a #4 or #5 kennel cut with a cute TB head (make sure the length is the same on top as it is on the beard). Never EVER shave the tail unless severely matted. Just take about an inch off the end, then “half-moon” the tail (groomer’s should know what this means). Bob the ears if the owner ask you too. Remember, ALWAYS listen to what the owner wants or give good advice.

I agree a NM 40 is to close. Try a NM 30.
